Boca Raton Airport Projects Dashboard
The Boca Raton Airport Authority (BRAA) has invested more than $100 million in capital improvement projects over the past decade. A portion of this funding has been secured through grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The Boca Raton Airport (BCT) operates without reliance on ad-valorem taxes.
Facilities Management Plan
This project seeks to update the Airport’s Facilities Management Plan to document conditions and guide maintenance, rehabilitation, and capital planning.
Taxiway Geometry Improvements and Runway 5 Aircraft Holding Bay
This project consists of geometry updates to Taxiways P2, P3 and P9 to align with the current FAA Advisory Circular standards, as the current configuration no longer meets those guidelines. Additionally, this project rehabilitates the Runway 5 Aircraft Holding Bay.
Electrical Vault and Airport Beacon Relocation
This project includes the analysis, design, and construction required to relocate the electrical vault and Airport beacon, including potential integration with the ATCT.
Strategic Business Plan Amendment
This project will update the Strategic Business Plan, originally completed in FY2020, to advance strategic priorities related to financial resiliency and land development opportunities. Additionally this amendment will provide a new framework for optimizing BCT’s existing and potential land assets.
Vertiport Study
This project will deliver a comprehensive framework of operational, infrastructure, and business parameters to support the phased implementation of a vertiport at the Boca Raton Airport, aligning with emerging aviation technologies and long-term strategic goals.
Automated Weather Observation System Replacement
The Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) at the Boca Raton Airport was first installed in 2001. The AWOS at the Boca Raton Airport provides weather information to the Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower, and pilots during times when the tower is closed. In recent years, the AWOS has become increasingly unreliable and requires significant maintenance to remain operational. As more parts continued to fail, the cost of maintaining the system increased significantly, and led to extended periods of outages.
This project comprised of the construction, construction administration, inspection, testing, and other professional consulting services necessary to the construction of a new AWOS.
Electrification Master Plan
This project documented current infrastructure conditions, identified system vulnerabilities, and provided a framework for future improvements in resiliency, efficiency, and electrical capacity at BCT. As part of this project, the BRAA evaluated:
- All landslide and tenant electrical infrastructure
- Utility service and metering
- Emergency and standby power
- Future electrification and solar opportunities
Stormwater Improvements/Wildlife Mitigation Project (Phase 1B)
This project aimed to enhance safety around Runway 5-23, as well as rehabilitating and improving stormwater management along Airport Road. This involved the design and construction of stormwater improvements, including the installation of underground stormwater detention systems along Airport Road and the regrading of airfield stormwater detention areas.
Sustainability Management Plan Update
This project established a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP) that developed the Airport’s operational data, input from the Sustainability Advisory Partners (SAP), and the BRAA Board. The plan provided the BRAA with a data management tool to track performance and emissions, along with a technical report and outreach materials to support implementation and communicate the Airport’s long-term sustainability commitments.
Noise Exposure Map Update
This project updated the Airport’s Noise Exposure Map (NEM), which occurred in 2001. The updated NEM provides a current representation of noise exposure to assess land use compatibility in areas surrounding the airport. The updated NEM was approved by the FAA in Summer 2026.
Generator Replacement Project
This project entailed replacing the emergency generators for the Air Traffic Control Tower and the Airfield Electrical Vault. The project also included replacing associated peripherals, cabling, monitoring equipment, fuel tanks, and containment equipment.
Administration Building Improvements
This project entailed expanding the functionality of the building beyond administrative and management offices to include meeting space adequate for public meetings and monthly BRAA meetings. The enhancements also included modifications to HVAC systems to include upgraded filtration and disinfecting capabilities.
Observation Area
This project developed an observation area that can be used by the general public and aviation enthusiasts for educational purposes, public assembly, event hosting, and other general uses.
Geographic Information System Implementation – Phase 2
This project served as a follow-up phase to earlier Geographic Information System (GIS) projects that aimed to assist in the collection and maintenance of airport and aeronautical data for BCT. These initial phases of this multi-year project consisted of the collection of data and installation of required hardware and software. Once the datasets were added, the Airport Layout Plan (ALP) and other CAD drawings for utilities and floor plans were converted into a GIS format and added to the geodatabase. As changes were made to these documents, they were updated in the geodatabase, allowing the map application to always maintain the most up-to-date airport information.
Security Enhancements – Phase 4
The project entailed a continuation of the BRAA’s ongoing security enhancements for the Boca Raton Airport. These security enhancements began with Phase 1, undertaken in 2007, which involved upgrades to the existing security cameras and supporting infrastructure, including the primary monitoring room systems, as well as the conversion of two perimeter gates to controlled access gates.Â
Safety Management System (SMS) Implementation
This project implemented aspects of safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion based on the airport’s SMS GAP Analysis in 2017. The SMS implementation project provided the appropriate programs, reports, policies, and software to implement the recommendations of the GAP analysis.
The project is eligible for the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) since it meets the following objectives: safety and airport planning. In accordance with FAA regulations and International Civil Aviation Organization standards, this project established an SMS for its entire airfield environment (including movement and non-movement areas).
Widen Taxiways F and P4 & Relocation of Taxiways B and C
This project maintained compliance with current FAA regulations requiring that no direct access from a parking apron to the runway be available.
Widen Taxiways P5, C, P9, P10Â
This project involved widening Taxiways P10, P9, C and P5 between Taxiway P and the ramps to meet the required FAA Taxiway Edge Safety Margins in Advisory Circular 150/5300-13A for the largest aircraft currently using the Boca Raton Airport. This project also entailed the replacement of existing PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicator) lights with LED equipment.
